Just Let Me Be Great

Did you guys see the French Montana - Tichina Arnold situation?  That was priceless.  Usually, I'm not the one to even acknowledge that type of trash, but this was a little more than that.  It started out as trash, but it quickly became treasure...at least for me.  And maybe Montana was just playing around, but everybody knows that you don't crack on the girl in school who will definitely be richer and more powerful than you one day...and certainly not in front of everyone.  But he did it, and when Pam...uh...Tichina caught wind of that Instagram picture (it was kinda funny), she lit into French like a rich nerd should; calling him, his joke, and his life immature and craftily explaining why she's at the top of evolution and he'll always be a monkey.  Yeah, maybe she did take it too far, but because it was a good response (and the fact that I think Montana's music is retarded), it really was an good example of what greatness really is.

'Cause that's why everyone is on social media, right?  To be great?  To show we're great?  To show we only do great things?  To tell each other to be great?  It's all about....great...right?  Doesn't French rap about how great a dude he is?  How great a drug dealer he used to be?  How great his music, weed, women, etc. is?  Aren't we all trying to be the next great parent, spouse, whatever?  We gotta show we have the great husband or wife, boy or girlfriend, brother or sister.  We pressure ourselves to be great, we pressure others to be great.  If you don't wanna be great, then you're deficient somewhere.  We all hear sayings like "no one wants to finish second"; reinforcing the social standard of being great...or at least acting like it.  We're at the point now where a person doesn't even have to be great at actually anything...just be great.

What's true, however, is that most of us...really all of us...aren't even good enough to be considered being great at anything of value.  The Bible reinforces this several times, such as in Romans 3:10 when Paul says that no person living is great.  Even Jesus, who we all call great, said that the only one that's good....including Himself in the group with us...is God alone.  Yet Christ in His greatness gave us insight on how we can be considered great by the Great God.

When His bumbling disciples were discussing with themselves who would be the greatest, Christ told them that if whoever wants to be great needs to serve everybody (Mark 9:33-35).  And when you consider that response, given that Jesus is the source and He served everyone the chance to be in the family of God with His life, it really puts a different view on what being great really is.  It also verifies the fact that many will never see greatness...not because of our talent, achievements, or opportunities...but it's because we don't use those things to serve other people.  Which leads to another thought: whatever it is you do or want to do, how will it help others...and even deeper....how will it help others in a way that will please God?

I can't just say 'whatever it is you do, do to God', because some of the things we want to do aren't close to being Godly.  But I do suggest we put more effort into developing our skills and abilities with the benefit of others in mind.  I also think it's wise to deepen our relationship with The Lord in order to clearly hear what professions, hobbies, and other things He wants us to keep; and which ones we should discard for the help of others and the for the glory of Him.  We've all heard about the joy one can feel by helping someone else, but the benefits of serving is not limited to emotional pleasure...these rewards are eternal.

Peace
